Sunday’s Popeye comic strip pays homage to two American icons: Popeye and the band Wilco. The artwork prominently features the S.S.Wilco sailing into port to deliver Wilco Brand Spinach. Hoards of people are lining up on the dock as Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto and the entire gang assist Wilco in handing out cans of Wilco Spinach to the crowds. The art, created by Frank Caruso and Ned Sonntag, features caricatures of Wilco band members: lead singer Jeff Tweedy, bassist John Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalists Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche.

Celebrated North African “Touareg” band Tinariwen will be premiering a new video for their song “Iswegh Attay” off their Grammy nominated Anti-Records release Tassili today at Pitchfork.com. The beautifully shot clip features the band performing the mournful and evocative song as they enact a ritualistic tea drinking ceremony sacred to their nomadic North African culture.
The ceremony depicted involves green tea, fresh mint, lots of sugar and a meticulous preparation. When the first pot is drained, the process is repeated using the same tea leaves, but adding sugar. Then it’s done a third time. Tea is always brewed thrice. It’s a ritual as rigid and formal as a Japanese tea ceremony. The name of the three tea servings; the first is bitter as death, the second is sweet as life and the third is soft as love.
The haunting and rhythmic music played over artistically shot images of this ceremony create a mood of longing and loss that is unforgettable. To view this video care of Pitchfork.com, just go here.
On Tassili the renowned “Touareg” band returned to the essence of their hypnotic desert blues sound. Recorded in the South-Eastern Algerian desert, the band is joined by Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio. Later on, virtuoso guitarist Nels Cline of Wilco and the horns of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band contributed.
“Let’s get one thing straight: Tinariwen is just about the best guitar-based rock band of the 21st century.” – NPR

The modernist pop band Islands have announced a select series of live dates across North America. The critically acclaimed band will be performing songs from their highly anticipated new album A Sleep & A Forgetting which arrives in-stores on February 14th via Anti-Records.
The shows will be held in intimate venues recreating the confessional and deeply personal tone of this enthralling new album. While the new record continues the band’s inclination for crafting adventuresome state of the art pop music, this time band leader Nick Thorburn has infused the songs with a deeply personal introspection which gives the record a new and powerful emotional resonance.
“This album is far more personal than any I’ve made before,” Thorburn explains. “I left New York and came to Los Angeles and there was this piano where I was staying. And that’s where I wrote these songs. The record deals with loss, with memory and forgetting and with dreaming.”
The new record offers all the shimmering sonic textures and irresistible melodies that have come to define Islands enduring appeal, but there is a deeply personal cathartic undercurrent to the songs, transforming personal unrest into affecting and soulful pop music.
